Explore Growth

If you haven’t noticed yet, I have an attraction to trees.  We have many around our home, and I come to think of them as my teachers.

One of the things I have noticed about trees is that they are either growing or dying.  Once they reach their maximum growth, they gradually become more brittle. Branches start breaking off, and they can’t withstand the Kansas wind and ice and heat like they used to.

Maybe people tend to operate that way too. To remain supple and adaptable we have to keep growing. We are never too old to learn new things.  In “Explore Growth” I seek to express that message from the trees.  The trunk and branches are made from a geological survey map, and the landscape is made from book and map pages.  I gave it a fall setting since that seems to be the season that is incongruous with growth.

First I painted a background on a 12 x 12 canvas.

Then I started adding paper, and more paint.

I added more color with paint, being careful to pay attention to the sides as well.

The words were stamped on in a typewriter style font.
