National Pi Day – Art Journal Prompt

As a young child, my brother, older by eight years, took it upon himself to teach me pi.  I had no real understanding of pi as the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle, but I could rattle off the numbers 3.1415926535 on command just as he had taught me.  I think he was trying to trick people into thinking I was a child genius with terrific math skills at age six.  Number crunching failed to become my area of interest, but I never have forgotten that magical unending string of numbers that led to other discoveries for me like Fibonacci numbers and the divine proportion.  It is in those places that math and art seem very intertwined.

March 14 (3/14) is the day of annual celebration commemorating Pi. This year is special because on Saturday, the date will be 3/14/15, the first five digits of pi.  At 9:26 and 53 seconds, the time and date will be pi perfect!

So, I feel like the art journal prompt this week just must have something to do with pi.  Since I am not a terribly mathy person, I would just go with something with circles…

Or, you could journal about a favorite pi(e) recipe.. pies are after all a circle, and they do affect my circumference!

Or, you could commemorate the other special event on March 14… the birthday of Albert Einstein, who did happen to be rather mathy!

So many things waiting to be journaled!

Your journal pages are great! Those are fun ideas for pages too. Despite it being my husband’s birthday (all he has in common with Einstein) I had never heard of pi day until I moved to the U.S. That will be because we would write the date 14.3 in Britain. I will have to make a pie now.
