“From Him and to Him and by Him and through Him All Things Were Created”

This artwork was inspired by a few different verses, especially Colossians 1:16 “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him” and Rom. 11:36 which says “For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.”

The idea of this is a central hub of which Christ in all of His diety and manhood is the center.  How fitting for Him to be the seed of my “Sonflower”! In the petals are some iconic images of Christ, as well as the Mother and Child. The golden petals, representing all of creation, are like a halo of glory around Him. Additionally there are all kinds of creation; birds, flowers, fish,a turtle…a moon, and of course people. What else can you spot in this hide and seek art?

first layer of collage

To get the a good base for the piece, I collaged the entire surface of the panel with scraps of painty deli paper, some Citra Solv pages, book pages, and some other bits laying on my work table.  I spritzed it with some red spray ink through a stencil to add some depth of color.   As you can see, by the time I added layers of paints and papers and more paints, the colors are much more subtle in the finished piece, with just a hint of what lies beneath!  I feel the secret to beautiful collage is in patient layering, something I have to force myself to not be in a big hurry about!

(This piece is available as a print in my etsy shop.)

The layering and colors are terrific in this. I like how it looks like the images in the petals were just always there.
