“Lucky” Jefferson in my Art Journal

Lucky

“I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more of it I have.”

Thomas Jefferson

This is a page out of my art journal and is an example of paint over collage.  You can see the map papers, book pages, and other elements (like a magazine cut out of the word lucky) barely hidden beneath the paint, but did you know there is a magazine image under the face as well?  The new face looks entirely different, but gluing in a cut out to paint on top of can help with proportion and angle of the features.

When cutting a face out of a magazine, I don’t worry about the hair, just the face.  Nothing has to be neat and tidy, because you will be painting on top anyway.  I simply coat the collaged piece with clear gesso, let dry, and then paint in my own style!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
