“Liberty”
I have been having lots of fun with this grid style artwork that to me has something of a mid Century modern feel to it. The style is probably more reminiscent of the De Stijl (The Style) movement which was represented by a international group of artists of all mediums. This group renounced naturalistic representation in favor of a more pared down and simplistic representation that consited of straight lines and rectangular planes. Unlike my contemporary version, the artists of the De Stijl movement used primary colors. Though his work began a few years before the De Stijl movement was named, Piet Mondrian seems to be a good example of this style, and is perhaps the most famous.
My version is perhaps a little more representational, but still falls back on the idea of simplified shapes supported by lines and rectangles. I have been finding these very fun to work on in mixed media with the use of papers (postage stamps work perfectly!), paint, chalks, and oil pastels. I make the lines stand out with the use of a Stabilo pencil, once I get them established with paper and paint.
Here is another example that I just finished this week,
“Mug on the Grid”
and here are some earlier pieces done in a Wichita theme.
Any of these are available as a print from my etsy shop, just let me know which one/s you would like!
These pieces also inspired a stencil which you can find in my etsy shop.
I have been having so much fun with these this year that I am going to share in the fun at a workshop at Tessera Fine Art Gallery in Wichita, KS on Saturday, August 11 from 1 to 4pm. Would love to see you there!
Kim
