Vulnerability

While I work, I listen to audio books.  Recently, I have been listening to “The Power of Vulnerability: Teachings of Authenticity, Connection, and Courage” by Brene Brown.  I have also listened to her “Daring Greatly”  I know that both of these works have encouraged me to go out on a limb and take some chances that have stretched me.

I appreciate Brene’s definition of love:

“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness, and affection.  It is not something that we give or get, it is something we nurture and grow a connection tat can be cultivated between two people when it exists in each one of them.  We can only love others as much as we love ourselves.”

They have also influenced some of my work, like this journal page – “Here’s my Heart, please handle with care!”  I used a letter stencil for the title, painted it in with red acrylic paints, and outlined the letters in black.  Around the edges of the page I used my own hand carved stamps to create a border.

My actual Jack of hearts playing card is tucked into a corner of the page.  I am not wild about my handwriting, but I think it is important to include it on most of my journal pages.

This art journal is made from a magazine.  On this spread, I used layers of collage and gesso to build the background, but left this hand that was on the original page.  I enjoy the challenge of using an element from a different layout on my page.  This hand seemed perfect to be holding out a “fragile” heart for the world to see!
