Just finished “Did You Hear?” in time to display at Artlandia for the month of September. It is a bit larger than most of my mixed media, on a 24 x 36 inch canvas. I started with a canvas covered with strips torn from National Geographic magazines, which I then treated with Citra Solv concentrated cleaner. I worked over the background several times as the piece progressed until it became a muted blue.
I constructed the trees by cutting strips from images of graffiti and then shading with paint. I added the birds which are a mix of collage and paint.
I like how even the edges of the deep canvas look interesting!

And finally, the winner from last week’s name that piece contest is….
“Roses dans la reverie” which is Roses in Reverie in French. Thanks for the great name Jackie! If you send your address to me at victoryrd@hotmail.com, I will send you a print of “Roses dans la reverie”!

Thank you!

That piece is wonderful! I love the detail in the birds. Do you have to do something between treating the paper with the citrasolv and painting on it, to avoid a chemical reaction? Just curious.

I usually do two things…. the birds are collaged and painted on watercolor paper on top of the Citra Solv paper background, and I also coat the entire piece with matte gel medium once I am done altering the paper.

Cool. Thanks. I was just curious how that worked. I think the effect you get with the citrasolv on the papers really adds depth to your pieces. It’s really clever how you then utilize that texture in your collage. I always enjoy seeing what you create.
