“Ruby Red”

posted in: ABOUT THE ART | 2

“Ruby Red” is an example of reverse painting on a mixed media background. I used Golden high flow paints, acrylic inks, alcohol inks, blending solution and alcohol to create an interesting field of red on Yupo paper similar to this one:

Then I “found” flowers, a vase, and a table top and painted everything else lightly in a blue green hue. I glazed on a little green on top of the leaves and stems and added some pen and ink detailing. I finished up the piece by mounting the Yupo paper to a birch cradled wood panel and painted the sides a corresponding red.

I created this 11 x 14 inch piece as a negative spaces workshop example, but I will be taking it along with lots of other pieces for a solo show in April at Botanica in Wichita. If you are local, stop by and take a look!

Stunning, I like peering at the original and finding the flowers you painted … very cool!

What is it about these colors and techniques that draw me in? It’s mesmerizing….
