“Mutware” is so named in honor of a well known elephant that lived in Rawanda until the ripe old age of 48. Mutware died of natural causes in 2018, so it seemed fitting to name this artwork after him. Mutware was raised among humans until in 1975 he was relocated as part of a ground breaking conservation effort to return he and 25 other elephants to the wild in a protected park in Rawanda where he lived for the next 40 years.
I used National Geographic magazine pages, torn into strips and treated with Citra Solv to create a reverse painting of the elephant, as well as the stenciled pattern (by Crafter’s Workshop) of the background. It is a process where I basically wipe away ink to create the light areas, and leave untouched what will become the darker shadows. Elephants are one of my favorite subjects for this technique!
