October 31 – Broom Making with Kelsi
In this workshop, guest teacher Kelsi Depew will be teaching participants how to make a traditional whisk broom in the morning, and a kitchen broom in the afternoon. Participants should be prepared to use their hands and feet to craft these brooms. You will be seated and your feet only need to be able to hold a foot treadle still while pulling the broom tight against the cord with your hands. You will learn a short history on broom-making and explore different styles of brooms before choosing materials to complete your own. Once a broom is started, it should be completed before lunch or leaving the workshop as there is not a good way to 'pause' the project. Materials will be provided, but if you have any special charms or additions (dried plants, beads, stones, charms, feathers, etc.) you would like to incorporate into your broom, you may bring them. There will be a Beef and Rice Bowls lunch package option (see website) that includes toppings, sauces, a drink, and dessert, but no lunch pickup for this workshop.
