Using Stencils with Alcohol Inks

One of my favorite ways to use alcohol inks is with stencils, because I LOVE stencils with any medium! I have used it here with my two part Sugar Skull stencil and mask.

First, I create my own alcohol inks by mixing printer ink refills with 91% isopropyl alcohol in a dropper bottle. You can mix whatever colors you want, make them as light or intense as you want, and all for a fraction of the cost of purchased alcohol inks! I start with about a 1:1 ratio, and adjust as desired.

Next, I dropped yellow, a deep red (magenta + a touch of black), and purple (cyan + magenta) inks onto a sheet of YUPO paper to create an inky field.

Lay any stencil on top of the ink, making sure there are no air bubbles between the YUPO and the stencil. Leave to dry. This requires some patience since it may take an hour or more. Do not remove the stencil until the ink is entirely dry!

This is a super fun effect with alcohol inks.
