Shibori Easter Eggs

Technically, shibori involves folding, stitching, or otherwise shaping whatever you are dyeing to receive the dye in differing patterns. So maybe I can’t actually do that with eggs, but I sure can give them an indigo shibori look!

I used rubber bands and masking tape to achieve the patterning:

I gave them a dip in my indigo vat, and then set them aside to oxidize. Once they had turned a lovely indigo, I removed all the tape and rubber bands and rinsed them well.

I am not sure about the safety of eating these eggs because of the chemicals used in the dye vat, so I think these will be for decoration only. You could use blown eggs and keep them year after year.

There are however, plenty of food safe natural dyes you can use to color your eggs like avocados, beets, blueberries, or turmeric, just to name a few. And you can use the same banding and taping to create patterns on them!
