New Faux Stained Glass Art

posted in: ABOUT THE ART | 8

Some time back I watched a presentation on stained glass and was really captivated by both the history and beauty of this art form. I decided to see if I could achieve the look with what I already had on hand… paint! I made some pieces and shared ‘Prairie Color”, awhile back, but I think I missed sharing “Savannah” and “Floral Frolic”. All three of these are available for purchase!

You can find this piece, “Floral Frolic” in my etsy shop.

Last weekend I taught a workshop on this technique. Whenever I teach a workshop, I get motivated to do some new creating in that particular technique, just to ‘brush up’ a bit. (I can rarely think of puns folks, so enjoy that one!).

This photo I took a week or two ago when at the zoo with my granddaughters:

It has such beautiful shadows I decided to try a stained glass version:

In addition to mat acrylic paint, I used chalk pastels, Stabilo pencil, oil pastels, and Posca paint pens on these. I can never stop with just one medium!

The trick with these is to first do an underpainting. While still a bit tedious, the underpainting saves a lot of time, and adds richness to the colors. Then I set to work painting in the shapes, getting smaller and smaller with each layer. A Stabilo pencil forms the ‘leading’, though at the very end I usually clean up the lines with a small brush and black paint, or a fine black Posca Paint pen.

I have a few more pieces in progress, and I look forward to getting those finished up!

Is this a technique you would give a try?

Lovely! As a glass enthusiast with many mosaic projects in days gone by…… these work for faux mosaic. Will you have a tutorial for this or Zoom class? Looking forward to the HOW TO 😁

So beautiful, but I don’t think I would have the patience … looks so intricate, but also looks like one of those therapeutic exercises as well! Love these and look forward to more!
